Propolis is a natural product dispensed in pharmacies and natural product warehouses. Its properties have long been acknowledged in traditional medicine, yet presently there is no monographic standard. The propolis properties most cited in the literature are its anti-infl ammatory, antioxidant, and antiseptic properties, as well as its ability to act as an antineoplastic agent. In this paper, the pharmacologic and analytical data for propolis are reviewed, with the aim of providing a standardization technique that allows the production of effective and safe propolis products.
